Happy 2 days after Christmas! Lately, I have been waking up around 4:45 am not able to go back to sleep. I think some call it pregnancy insomnia. Others tell me this is the baby’s way of preparing me for what’s to come (March 2019). Either way, I can’t sleep. So, I do the same thing that I am sure a lot of you do…I start the scroll through social media.
Because today is December 27, everyone is talking about the after Christmas Sales. So this morning, I tapped through story after story and viewed all the “amazing” deals that are available NOW, things that are going to “sell out quick” and stuff that everyone seems to “absolutely love and can’t believe they have lived without”. Yes, after Christmas sales can be great…but I am here to let you in on a little secret. There will still be stuff on sale tomorrow, the next day, the next week, and the next month. Just like everything else, the retail world is speeding up to try and keep up with the today’s consumer. No longer do we have to wait for that one sale a year because most retailers offer flash sales (short lived sales that happen more sporadically) in order to entice you to buy more frequently. It’s scandalous yet effective.
Now, I am not saying don’t buy anything. If there is something that you have had your eye on and it went on major sale after Christmas, then scoop it up. If you see a basic item that you know you will wear on the daily, buy it now. But just because that sparkly sweater is on sale in EVERY COLOR, it doesn’t mean you have to buy EVERY COLOR. If you are off work for a couple of days and have nothing to do, it doesn’t mean that you have to buy ALL THE STUFF that has a discount. Shopping from boredom is just as bad as eating from boredom and it has the same effect on your closet that it does on your stomach. If you are buying items in multiples, buying items JUST because they are marked down, or buying because you are bored then stop now! As a person that manages people’s wardrobes for a living, I can tell you right now that this is where your closet can get in trouble. And we don’t want that do we?
This is just a little advice from your favorite personal shopper, which you can take or leave. If you do decide you need to take advantage of some of the great deals going on right now, use a strategy. Make sure the item functions in your life, works into your wardrobe, fits correctly and that you know exactly how you are going to wear it. If you can answer all of these questions then buy away!
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and I look forward to sharing more style tips and tricks in 2019!
